Ephraim Moses Lilien
1874 Drohobycz (Galicia) – 1925 Badenweiler
Studied at the Academy of Arts, Krakow 1890-92. Collaboration with the avantgarde magazine „Jugend“, Munich 1897. Illustrated books „Juda“ by Börries Freiherr von Münchhausen, 1900 and „Lieder des Ghetto“ by Morris Rosenfeld, 1902. Solo exhibition at Kunsthalle Bayer, Leipzig 1900. Member of the Zionist Movement, 1901. The book „E. M. Lilien, Sein Werk“ by Stefan Zweig was published, Berlin 1903. Co-founder of the Bezalel Academy of Arts & Design in Jerusalem, 1905. Illustration of the Bible,1908-13. Settled in Braunschweig, 1920. Solo show at Gallery Sidney Phillips, New York 1923. Exhibition to his 50th Birthday, with a speech held in his honor by Chaim Weizman, at Logenhaus, Berlin 1924. Participated in „Berlin Metropolis – Jews and the New Culture, 1890-1918“, Jewish Museum, New York 1999/2000.
